What these tags actually do

When someone shares your link on WhatsApp, Facebook or Slack, the app fetches the page and reads its Open Graph tags to build the card. Without them a bare URL is shown — and click-through collapses.

Title and description

Google truncates titles around 60 characters and descriptions around 155–160. The tool counts live and turns red when you go over. Write the title so the important information comes first — then even a truncated title still carries the message.

The share image

The recommended size is 1200×630 pixels at a 1.91:1 ratio. An image narrower than 600 pixels renders as a small card rather than a wide one. Note that the image must be an absolute, publicly reachable URL — a relative path or an image behind a login simply will not load. It is worth compressing it before upload.

I updated the tags but the old card still shows

The networks cache previews, sometimes for weeks. Facebook offers a Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn a Post Inspector — both force a re-crawl. After refreshing, every new share shows the updated version.

Where does the code go?

Inside the page\'s <head>, before the closing tag. Every page needs its own tags — an identical title and description across a whole site is wasted, and reads to Google as thin content. Once done, you can generate share links and check the card renders correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need Open Graph tags at all?

Because without them a link shared on WhatsApp, Facebook or Slack shows as bare text. With them you get a card carrying a title, description and image — and the difference in click-through is substantial. These are also the tags that decide what appears when someone shares your page without writing anything.

What is the right length for a title and description?

Google truncates titles around 60 characters and descriptions around 155–160. The tool counts live and turns red when you exceed it. A tip: write so the important information comes first — even truncated, the message survives.

What size should the share image be?

1200 by 630 pixels, a 1.91:1 ratio. An image narrower than 600 pixels renders as a small card rather than a wide one. The URL must be absolute and publicly reachable — a relative path or an image behind a login simply will not load.

The networks cache previews, sometimes for weeks. Facebook has a Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn a Post Inspector — both force a re-crawl. After refreshing, every new share shows the updated version.

Where do I paste the code?

Inside the page's <head>, before the closing tag. Every page needs its own tags — the same title and description across a whole site is wasted, and reads to Google as thin content.

What is a canonical tag and when do I need one?

It tells Google which URL is the official one when the same content is reachable at several addresses — with and without www, with tracking parameters, or in a print version. Without it Google picks for itself, and not always correctly. If your site has another language version, hreflang tags are worth adding too.
